Save the Children has hosted a Youth in Action learning event titled ”Investing in Gender Equality for Sustainable Livelihoods for Rural African Youth”.
The objective was to demonstrate the importance of focusing on gender equality as a foundation to youth livelihoods programming aiming to generate meaningful impact for adolescents. Save the Children presented its key learnings on the gender barriers to girls’ and boys’ participation in youth livelihoods opportunities, in particular in the rural context where the Youth in Action program operates. Early marriage and early pregnancy were highlighted as some of the major barriers that prevent girls from joining and staying within the program. The event also explored how and why transferrable skills are pivotal for meaningful participation for girls and boys in youth livelihoods opportunities. Experiences from other programs in overcoming gender barriers were also shared by Plan International, MEDA and the Population Council.
